The NWT Drivers Licence
The Process
- Go to one of the NWT Driver and Vehicle Licensing Issuing Offices to renew or apply for a Drivers Licence. That page also has the schedule for driver examiner visits to various communities.
- You will be required to fill out an “N.W.T. Application for Driver’s Licence or General Identification Form”, prior to the issuance of a driver’s licence or GIC.
- Meet the identification requirements and an issuing agent will give you a Temporary Drivers Licence (TDL). (If you are from outside of Canada, please click here.) The TDL you receive at that time can be used to drive until you receive the final licence by mail in two to four weeks.
Those renewing an NWT Drivers Licence who have a Secure Drivers Licence, whose address on their Licence is current, and who have already met all conditions for obtaining a secure Drivers Licence, can use the Secure Drivers Licence alone to meet all identification requirements for renewal. Those clients who also wish to change their address information when renewing their DL, must provide their secure DL and a residency document. Those who do not meet these conditions will still have to produce Proof of Birthdate and Legal Name, government-issued photo identification, and proof of residency.
Wait for your Drivers Licence to arrive in the mail – the card will be mailed directly to you.
The General Identification card
The Process
- Go to one of the NWT Driver and Vehicle Licensing Issuing Offices to renew or apply for a General Identification card.
- You will be required to fill out an “N.W.T. Application for Driver’s Licence or General Identification Form”, prior to the issuance of a GIC.
- Meet the identification requirements.
The process for obtaining a General Identification Card (GIC) is identical, except that there is no temporary GIC issued.
