The Yellowknife Airport is managed by the NWT Department of Transportation (DoT) as the primary aviation gateway to the communities of the Northwest Territories. DoT is working with industry, other GNWT departments, and the City of Yellowknife to chart a course for future development at the Yellowknife Airport, with emphasis on safety, security, and efficiency.
Development at the Yellowknife Airport is intended to make the flow of goods and people within the airport more efficient and effective. Development must be reasonable, responsible, and affordable.
Rapid economic growth in Yellowknife and the NWT has resulted in aviation passenger growth that exceeds national levels. Air cargo traffic also plays a critical role in the economy of the NWT.
The 2004 Yellowknife Airport (YZF1) Development Plan provides valuable information on how DoT and the community of Yellowknife are working together to meet the challenges of continuing growth and pressures on this critical transportation hub. The Plan was updated in 2008 and is available here.
