Ground transportation

The Yellowknife Airport maintains contracts for the provision of car rental and taxi services. Information on car rental, hotel shuttle, and taxi services can be found
here. Accessibility services are unavailable from rental cars issued by companies based at the Yellowknife Airport Terminal. However, there is wheelchair accessibility from the terminal to a wheelchair accessible taxi (Handyvan), which can be requested when ordering from either City Cab (867-873-4444) or Diamond Cabs (867-873-6666). The Handyvan can accommodate power wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The service is on a demand basis, but advance notice is advised. The rate for the Handyvan is the meter rate plus $6.

The drop-off and pick-up areas in front of the terminal are accessible, and there are designated drop-off and pick-up areas.

There is only one terminal at the Yellowknife Airport, but passengers may require transportation to the hangars of other companies that provide scheduled and chartered services. There is no airport-supplied transportation to these locations.

Wheelchairs are available from each airline carrier. Electric cart services are unavailable.

For persons with disabilities who are arriving by a private vehicle, designated parking spaces are located in the parking lot near the Terminal entrances. You will require a placard from the NWT Council for Persons With Disabilities to park in these spaces. A valid parking placard from another jurisdiction can also be used. If you do not remember your placard, a temporary placard can be issued by the Council. Please call the Council at 867-873-8230 for more information.

Other Information

Service dogs are welcome at the Yellowknife Airport. To ensure their comfort as well as public health, a designated service dog relief area is provided outside the main terminal across the street from the revolving door at the Departures area.

All aircraft at the Yellowknife Airport must be boarded from the tarmac. The ability to climb the airplane's steps is normally required to enter the aircraft unassisted. Airlines are responsible for providing the required assistance to allow passengers with disabilities to board their aircraft. Please advise the airline of any special requirements at check-in. The airline must make any arrangements required if they wish non-flying escorts to be permitted on the tarmac to assist in boarding.

The Yellowknife Airport does not maintain a TTY line for those with hearing disabilities. Airport staff can be contacted by
e-mail. In addition, TTY services are offered by the NWT Council for Persons With Disabilities, who can relay messages to airport staff. To access this service, first phone their main number at 867-873-8230 to advise that a TTY message is being sent, then wait three minutes before dialing the TTY line at 867-920-2674.

For those with hearing disabilities, airline staff should be notified at check-in if you require assistance in receiving flight notifications such as boarding announcements. Flight arrivals and departures are available on a number of screens in the airport or on
this website.

Should you require any further information, wish to advise us of your special requirements, or want to raise a concern about the Yellowknife Airport's accommodation services, please contact the Airport Manager by e-mail or by calling 867-873-4680.
