Travel Planning to Save Lives
The Northwest Territories is a place of great beauty, and great distances. When collisions occur or vehicles break down, it can be hours before help arrives. Drive Alive!, the travel safety awareness program of the Department of Transportation, reminds travellers to plan ahead before they venture out on the roads, trails, and waterways of the Northwest Territories.
The GNWT Department of Health and Social Services, in co-operation with the Canadian Coast Guard and the RCMP, has developed a Safe Travel Plan document which can be filled out by teens, highway travellers, and those going out on the land or waterways. Simply complete the document and leave it with someone so that information on your route, timetable, readiness, and vehicle is readily available if you need help.

There are a number of other things each person can do to increase their safety when travelling. Always drive sober. Be attentive to road conditions and hazards such as wildlife. Drive at a speed appropriate for the road conditions and weather. When on the land, travel with a buddy. Carry a fully charged satellite phone, if one is available, and use it only for emergencies.

Before leaving on any trip, ask yourself:
1.  Am I carrying enough fuel?
2.  Is everyone wearing their safety equipment (helmets,
seat belts, personal flotation devices, etc.)?
3.  Is everyone wearing or carrying clothing and warm coverings for the worst conditions we might face?

Before you leave on a highway trip, ask yourself:
1.  Have I checked
weather and travel conditions?
2.  Is my vehicle well-maintained? Are all my fluids topped up?
3.  Am I using the
right kind of tires? Is the tread on each tire adequate for the road I will be travelling on? Does each tire have the right air pressure?
4.  Does someone at my destination know when to expect me, and what to do if I don't arrive on time?
5.  Am I carrying adequate supplies of liquids and food in case I encounter bad weather?

Remember, we can all do more to reduce the risk of injuries and collisions on the roads, trails, and waterways of the Northwest Territories. Please,
Drive Alive!
