Each year, dozens of people in the NWT are killed or suffer serious injury because they have failed to take the most basic precaution of all - to wear standard safety equipment.
On NWT roads, seat belts and properly installed child restraints are a proven way to reduce your risk of serious injury or death. The overwhelming majority of those who suffer serious injury or death as a passenger or driver in a vehicle involved in a collision were not wearing these devices.
On NWT trails, helmets have been proven to reduce the risk of head injury when on a bicycle, ATV, motorcycle, or snow machine.
And on NWT waterways, properly fitted lifejackets annually save the lives of children and adults alike. In fact, more people die from drowning in the NWT than on all of the territory's roads and trails, and those who lose their lives typically were not wearing their lifejacket.
The effects of these injuries and fatalities on NWT communities is devastating. For every family member who is affected by a collision or drowning affecting a loved one, there are many more who are touched by the tragedy.
Drive Alive, in partnership with the RCMP G Division and the NWT health community, is establishing a program called the NWT Survivors Club to recognize those who avoided death or serious injury through the use of their seat belt, child restraint, helmet, or lifejacket on the roads, trails, and waterways of the NWT. Members of the RCMP and members of the NWT health community will nominate recipients, who will receive a certificate in their community celebrating their contribution to safe living.
If you know someone who should be a member of the NWT Survivors Club, contact your local health care centre or RCMP detachment to ask them to nominate that person.
