You want to be greener in your transportation options. Here are seven ways you can do so.

  1. Walk or ride a bike. It's a way to keep fit, and reduce your energy costs at the same time. (Remember to wear your helmet!)

2. Downsize your vehicle. Fuel efficient vehicles may not be able to go through rugged trails, but they do the job for the commute to work.

3. Get rid of your vehicle altogether, if it's practical to do so. The amount you spend on your vehicle may greatly exceed the cost of the occasional taxi.

4. Take the bus, if there's one in your community, even if you have a vehicle in the driveway. You'll save money on both fuel and maintenance.

5. Share a vehicle whenever possible. Try to coordinate hours of work with your spouse so that you can both arrive at the same time. Talk to your co-workers about car pooling.

6. Take into account environmental considerations when planning your trips. If you are flying, choose a hotel near the airport, and choose a fuel efficient rental. If you're driving, plan to drive at the speed limit to reduce your fuel usage. When you leave your house, put lights on timers, and unplug any appliance that is not essential.
