Drive Alive travel safety program

  Drive Alive! is the transportation safety program for the Northwest Territories. It draws together youth, community groups, businesses, enforcement, and industry to collaborate on efforts to reduce the number of collisions, injuries, and fatalities on the roads, trails, and waterways of the Northwest Territories. Anyone with an interest in public safety is invited to work with the Department of Transportation to achieve this objective.

On a typical day in the NWT, there are two vehicle collisions. In a typical week, two people are injured in vehicle collisions. In a typical year, three or more people die in road-related mishaps, and another 15 or more are seriously injured. Each year, drownings from boat mishaps typically kill as many people as all the deaths from automobile, snowmobile, bicycle, and ATV mishaps combined.  In almost every instance, collisions, injuries, and fatalities are preventable.

There are five key themes of the Drive Alive! program:

1.  Drive according to conditions, at a speed appropriate for the road, trail, or waterway;
2.
Give driving your full attention – do not operate a vehicle, ATV, snowmobile, or boat while distracted or impaired, and do not be a passenger where the driver is unable to give full attention to his or her driving;
3.
Wear or use appropriate safety equipment (helmets, life jackets, seat belts, properly installed child restraints, electronic stability control);
4.
Prepare for the unexpected, and be ready to respond to changing weather, road conditions, or wildlife on the road (check road bulletins, pack emergency equipment, bring along communications equipment, let someone know your plans)
5.  We can all do more to reduce the risk of injury or fatalities when travelling.
