EFFECTIVE APRIL 10, 2012 at 1200 hours
The Department of Transportation will place seasonal load allowances on selected highway sections starting on Tuesday, April 10th 2012 at 1200 hours. The Department of Transportation will enforce these load allowances in order to best protect and preserve the NWT Highway System, see listings below.

UPDATE EFFECTIVE WEDNESDAY May 16, 2012 at 1200 hours
The Department of Transportation will UPDATE seasonal load allowances on selected highway sections starting on Wednesday, May 16th 2012 at 1200 hours. The Department of Transportation will enforce these load allowances in order to best protect and preserve the NWT Highway System, see listings below.
Special Advisory – Liard Highway open to light vehicles, under 4,500 kilograms only
Due to expected rain in the Fort Liard area and the poor spring conditions of the Liard Highway, between km 38 (Fort Liard Access Road) and km 254 (Checkpoint), is open to light vehicles weighing less than 4,500 kilograms (cars, pickups, small passenger vans) effective 1200 hours (noon), Wednesday, May 16th 2012 until further notice. Motorists are advised to travel on this section of the Highway only if necessary.

These highway sections are set at 100% of the legal axle weight effective 1200 hours (noon), Tuesday, April 10th 2012 and until further notice:

Hwy 4 Km 0 – Km 3.5 (Giant Mine Access Road)

Hwy 8 Km 0 – Km 272.5
Special Advisory Notice for 90% Legal Axle Weight:
These highway sections are set at 90% of the legal axle weight effective 1200 hours (noon), Tuesday, April 10th 2012 until further notice:

These highway sections are set at 75% of the legal axle weight effective 1200 hours (noon), Monday, May 7th 2012 until further notice:

The Department of Transportation will continue to monitor highway conditions, traffic flows and transportation issues for all regulations and other restrictions in order to best protect and preserve our vital Transportation Infrastructure.
Any changes to the Allowable Weights on specific sections of the NWT Highway System will be announced 48 hours in advance by the Department on the Public Highway Information Service available toll free at: 1-800-661-0750. Or on the internet at:

Bus operators carrying passengers in the North who will be travelling on board one of the NWT's ferries must give notice of intended arrival time at the ferry landing by calling (867) 695-2552. Failure to give notice may result in passengers having to be taken across in two separate trips.
Fines have doubled for drivers charged under the Motor Vehicles Act for speeding through school and construction zones. Fines have tripled for drivers who are operating without a valid Drivers Licence. The penalty for driving without insurance has risen to $1700 + a victim surcharge for a total of $1,955.
Drivers are advised to check weather information and road bulletins for road and ferry conditions before their departure.
