Seasonal load restrictions on selected highway sections in the NWT have been lifted, but restrictions remain in place on two roads. Click here for more information.
TRAVEL ADVISORIES
A number of highways in the NWT are being affected by reduced visibility, and the status of the highways may be affected by firefighting operations with little or no notice. Travellers should check the road bulletins and this website before travelling to ensure they have the most current information on road conditions.
Travellers on Highway 5 are advised to watch for areas of limited visibility from nearby forest fires.
Delays of one hour or more can be expected in the Mosquito Creek Hill area (km. 227 to 229) of Highway 3 (the Yellowknife Highway), approximately 10 km. south of Edzo, to permit firefighting operations and backburning in the area. These delays may be experienced intermittently over the next three days. Travellers are advised to use extra caution as visibility may be reduced at times. Watch for highway crews and fire crews along the highway and right of way.
The Liard Trail (Highway 7) from Checkpoint (the junction with Highway 1) to Fort Liard is open to all traffic. Speed limit is reduced in some sections. To ensure safety, please obey all signs and watch for highway crews.
Drivers are advised to check weight limits, weather information, and road bulletins for road and ferry conditions before their departure.
KAKISA BRIDGE RESTRICTIONS
Restrictions on traffic across the Kakisa Bridge, near the junction of Hwy 1 and Hwy 3, are in effect. These restrictions require carriers crossing the Kakisa River Bridge to
- Vehicle must come to a complete stop prior to proceeding onto the bridge.
- Travel at 5 km/h down the centre of the bridge.
- Maximum one vehicle on the bridge.
- No braking or stopping on the bridge.
Maintenance of the bridge is ongoing, and drivers should exercise caution when passing those workers. The speed limit and restrictions on the bridge will be strictly enforced.

Hwy 1 Km 411 – Km 471.3 (Fort Simpson access road)
Hwy 1 Km 471.3 - Km 548
Hwy 2 Km 0 – Km 49
Hwy 3 Km 0 – Km 338
Hwy 4 Km 0 – Km 3.5, near the Giant Mine Access Road
Hwy 5 Km 0 – Km 266
Hwy 6 Km 0 – Km 38
Hwy 7 Km 0 - Km 37.6 (Fort Liard access road)
Hwy 8 Km 259 - Km 269
Special Advisory Notice for 75% restriction:
These highway sections are restricted to 75% of the allowable legal axle loading:
Hwy 4 Km 3.5 – Km 28
Hwy 7 Km 37.6 (Fort Liard Access Road) - Km 254
NB: This portion of highway is currently closed to commercial traffic until road conditions improve

Restrictions on commercial traffic crossing the Kakisa River Bridge will remain in effect.
Loads that are over 100,000 kg must continue to call ahead to get permission to cross any bridge or ice road.
