Check conditions and have a travel plan before you travel.
 

  • The Dempster Highway is gravel, starting at the Yukon/NWT border and continuing 272 kilometres to Inuvik.
  • The highway passes Fort McPherson at kilometre 85 and Tsiigehtchic at kilometre 142.6. The last 10 kilometres into Inuvik are paved.
  • When travelling this highway, be sure to check at the visitor centres in Dawson or Inuvik for the latest road conditions, as it is a long way between service centres.

Service begins in early June and ends in late October, and operates on demand from 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 a.m.

This crossing is subject to extreme high and low water level fluctuations that may cause delays at any time.

The ice crossing normally opens to small vehicles in mid-November, to larger vehicles in mid-December, and closes in early May.
