New Speeding System and Speeding Fines

Changes to the Motor Vehicles Act  will fine drivers in accordance with the exact speed they are travelling over the speed limit. With such an approach, individuals can be fined in a way that is proportional to the severity of the speeding offence.

For example, a driver travelling 13 km/h over the speed limit will receive a greater fine then a driver travelling 12 km/h over the speed limit. In addition, these fines are doubled in school and construction zones.

Currently Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan all fine drivers per kilometer over the speed limit and such an approach in the NWT would be consistent with these jurisdictions.
